Jim "Kimo" West and David Vito Gregoli - Friday Harbor

KIMO:

The  San Juan islands are a truly beautiful part of the world. I had been to Bainbridge and Whitney many time. When I landed a house concert in Anacortes I decided to take the ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island to check it out. I had a great time”walking tour”, a nice lunch and the capper was getting to see orcas on the way back!

Vito: 

I first went to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island (Pacific Northwest Puget Sound) with my ex wife and still dear friend Linda in 1995. We had heard amazing things about San Juan Island and none of it was hyperbole. 

The orcas, the small island village vibe, the beautiful countryside…all so perfect. 

The B&B was lovely although the water was very pungent with sulfur. Takes the fun out of bathing. LOL. 

But from the first moment on the ferry approaching the harbor, I knew it was a very special place.

About the process:

Jim and I were working on another song altogether and I was looking back at it after adding a bunch of overdubs and thinking “there are too many sections in this tune”. Let’s simplify it. So I turned to the bridge section, which was my favorite since it was so damn pretty (courtesy of Jim’s fine writing). It was also the ‘one action too many’. But I didn’t want to abandon it because, as I said, it was so lovely. How can you cut your favorite part of a song? So I got the idea to instead of cutting it, I.e. demoting it, I’d give it a raise with some perks so to speak. I took the section and with some crafty editing, turned it into its own song. I did add a 8 bar break, but other than that, it’s just that one section repeated in different iterations. So all the sections of the original song lived happily ever after.
