I was sitting in my backyard listening to the fireworks...not just the 'official' fireworks in the neighborhood but many households blowing firecrackers of different sizes/noises. It occurred to me that it resembled the sounds of war. Machine guns, mortars, cannons, etc.
And then it occurred to me that people are totally unaware of what they're invoking in this ritual. How many actually realize the ritual comes from the War of 1812, not the revolutionary war, as does the national anthem. And that the whole fireworks thing is a recreation of that battle that inspired the Francis Scott Key poem.
